The first 21 WDG4s Road numbers 12001 to 12021 were imported as built and few as kits and assembled at DLW Varanasi. As Indian Railways is targeting for 100% electrification, they are now converting EMD's into electrics to cut down the use of Diesel locomotives. Two WDG-4 (diesel) locomotives of 4000 HP have been combined and converted into one 12,000 HP WAG-11 electric engine units.
